Chapter 13

Reaching out, I felt for the compositions working around and within the storm. Now that I was paying attention to it, I could feel the power laced throughout the vast weather system. My mind skipped along the patchwork of compositions, trying to decide where to connect. With so much concentrated focus, I could broadly sense the purpose of each working I touched. I skimmed over the ones that felt as if they were attempting to restrain and slow the storm. Without connecting with them, I couldn’t tell their limitations or how they sought to achieve their purpose, but I wasn’t interested in them. I was looking for a different sort of composition.

Deeper inside the looming black, my questing mind felt a different kind of working. I faltered for a moment. Could this be what I was looking for? It felt nothing like I was expecting, being far too small in scope and power. I had been looking for something vast and terrifying.

And yet, nothing in the shape of this composition spoke of restraint. It felt entirely different from the others I had encountered.

There was only one way to be sure.

“Take control,” I whispered.

Within the space of a breath, I was no longer sensing the composition from the outside. Connected with the power that formed it, I could instantly grasp its every movement and purpose. Understanding filled me, and I realized that this composition wasn’t working alone. Just like the patchwork of power placed on the storm by the wind workers, there was a smaller, darker mosaic at its core.

Even as my mind was far distant in the middle of the storm, I could feel my hand reaching up to massage the side of my head. I had been afraid of grasping a working of vast power that might prove too much to control, but instead I was faced with a different challenge. Would a great many smaller workings be any easier to manage?

I forced my mind to focus. I would start with this one and go from there.

This composition directed the raging storm toward shore and the fields beyond, propelling it to move faster and faster. It unleashed its power slowly, ensuring it could keep up a steady pressure. Even connected to it, I couldn’t tell how long it had already been at work.

“Reverse,” I murmured, forcing the power to push the storm away from shore instead.

I reached for another composition, once again speaking the words to take control of it.

I had expected another identical working, but the composition that blossomed against my awareness had an entirely different purpose. It seized the winds around it and whipped them to a new level of ferocity, sending them spiraling and swirling at faster rates. For a moment, I hesitated, taken by surprise, and then it all made sense to me.

Whoever had done this—and I now had no doubt this was sabotage at work—hadn’t needed an enormous working because they hadn’t created this storm from nothing. They had merely harnessed the natural
